Guests can stop by anytime to walk the new stage, take a tour of the new barn’s interior, an official ribbon cutting ceremony, and maybe some surprises! Season tickets and memberships will be available for purchase, as well as the world premiere of a new book on the history of the Maplewood Barn. Come be a part of history at the Maplewood Barn’s Grand Opening, Wednesday May 16th from 6-7:30pm.

Auditions: Monday and Tuesday, May 14th and 15th at 7 PM.

What to expect:

Be prepared to do cold readings from the script, using different combinations of performers. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing.

Roles: There are three couples in this show, consisting of:

Frank Foster: Age 40-ish to mid-60’s; the goofy, mechanically inept boss; must be physically active (light jogging, etc.) and match up with Fiona.

Fiona Foster: Age 40-ish to mid-60’s; the middle-aged attractive socialite, used to nice things, but restless; must match up with Frank.

Bob Phillips: Age 20-ish to mid-30’s; smooth, attractive, lady’s man, married, but looking for fun; must match up with Terry.

Terry Phillips: Age 20-ish to mid-30’s; attractive wife of Bob, a mother, but seeking more through social activism; must match up with Bob.

William Detweiller: Age 30-ish to mid-40’s; obsequious to the boss, but domineering with his wife, stuck in the middle of romantic mix-ups; must match up with Mary.

Mary Detweiller: Age 30-ish to mid-40’s; meek, other-centered wife of William, who shows her spine in the end; must match up with William.

Play Synopsis

How The Other Half Loves has a single set, which represents two separate but over-lapping living rooms. One is a smart room with reproduction period furniture (the Fosters’ home); the other more contemporary and shabby (The Phillips’ home). Action takes place in both houses simultaneously. Frank is the boss of both Bob and William, although Bob and William do not know each other well. Bob is having an affair with Frank’s wife Fiona (who, though older, must be pretty enough to attract a younger man). When Frank and Terry start to ask questions about why their spouses are coming in late, Bob and Fiona decide to blame the Detweilers and comedic mix-ups ensue. In spite of all the zany episodes, this is not a farce – these are real people, with depth in each character, who care about what is happening. It will be a small, tight, ensemble cast. There are no small roles in this show.

On Halloween night, the Maplewood Barn Community Theatre, in collaboration with the Boone County Historical Society, held their first annual Haunted Maplewood Home. Over 100 “victims” took the haunted journey around a spooky Nifong Park, culminating with a trip through the old Maplewood Home which was populated by ghostly ghouls of Boone County history. Audiences were thrilled and chilled by the demented Dr. Frank Nifong, looney Lavinia, and a whole host of others who made sure this Halloween was one to remember.
